Materials.

Every New Primitive build is three layers, an envelope that faces the weather, an interior the body meets, and decking underfoot. Here’s the short list we work with, why we chose each, and how to specify them in the Configurator.

The little things

Every joint, every grain, on purpose.

The cladding you face from the lawn. The reveal you run your hand along when you walk inside. The deck under your wet feet on a Sunday morning. The little things you’ll spend the next ten years sitting next to.

We make them count.

Exterior cladding. Weather-facing.

The face of the build. Charred Accoya is the default, chosen for fire resistance, dimensional stability, and the way char ages. ASH and Pine are the warm-modern and traditional alternates.

Charred Accoya, Shou Sugi Ban Default

Charred Accoya

Included

Shou Sugi Ban. Vertical board & gap, 7/8" × 5-3/4" profile, 1/2" shadow reveal. Deep char, oiled matte. Doesn’t fade, gets quieter with the years.

  • 50 yr cladding
  • 10 yr finish
  • Tongue & groove
ASH cladding $$

ASH

+$3,500

Thermally-modified ash. Warm grain, dimensionally stable, holds finish through dry heat and storm cycles. The warm-modern alternative to charred.

  • Thermo-modified

Decking & floor. Where the contrast lives.

The surface you walk on between sauna and plunge. Thermal Ash is the default for its dimensional stability under wet/dry cycling.

The hand of it. Texture, joint, finish.

Close-ups from the dry factory. The grain, the char, the way ash holds a 7/8" plank. These textures are the day-to-day material, what your eye lands on when you’re sitting on the bench.

Interior texture close-up

Slat detail

7/8" cedar slat with 1/2" reveal. Vertical grain catches the lighting and breathes with the heat cycles.

Finish detail

Hard-wax oil on ash. Matte, low-VOC, food-grade, the same finish we run on every interior floor.

Edge joint detail

Joint detail

Tongue & groove, hidden fixing, fastened through the substrate not the face. Nothing visible on the cladding line.
